Frequently Asked Questions

Best hikes starting from Ortisei?
Top routes: Resciesa Plateau loop (funicular + 5 km, 1 h 30), Seceda ridge to Furcela Mesdì (8 km, 250 m ascent), and the classic Alpe di Siusi panoramic loop (10 km, 2,000 m altitude). All start at lifts within 8 minutes of La Rondula.
What elevation gain should I expect?
Easy day-hikes from cable cars have 200–400 m ascent. Intermediate routes such as Seceda–Pieralongia involve 500–800 m. Multi-day hut treks (Adolf Munkel weg etc.) include 1,000+ m daily.
What footwear is recommended?
Ankle-supporting hiking boots with Vibram-style soles and waterproof liner are recommended above 2,000 m. Trekking poles help on the steeper Resciesa and Pic descents (gradients up to 30%).
Are hut-to-hut hikes possible?
Yes — the Alta Via 2 traverses the Dolomites and crosses Val Gardena. Popular 2–3 day legs link Rifugio Firenze, Rifugio Puez and Rifugio Genova. Half-board at huts costs €55–80; bookings open in March for July–August.
Which trails are accessible by cable car?
Seceda (2,518 m), Alpe di Siusi (2,000 m), Col Raiser (2,107 m) and Dantercepies (2,298 m). All 4 are 5–15 minutes' walk from La Rondula and accept the Val Gardena Card (€68 for 3 days).
Are guided hikes available?
Yes — UIAGM-certified mountain guides run group hikes (€45/person half day) and private tours (€280/day, max 6 people). Bookings via Val Gardena Active or the tourist office.
Are trails suitable for children?
Yes — Alpe di Siusi has 50+ km of stroller-friendly paths and the kids' adventure trail Trodo dei Salumi has 8 themed stations across 4 km, finishing at a snack hut with playground.
